Directions to South Mountain Reservation

(location of the NJ Renaissance Kingdom)

From I-78 East

Take I-78 E. Stay to the right in "Local Lanes" when the highway splits.
Once in the local lanes, immediate move to the left, until you get to the left exit for NJ-24 W. Slow down! The exit is very nearly a U-turn.
Once on NJ-24 W, move to the right as quickly as you can, but be careful; people will be passing you on the right.
Follow the signs for the exit to JFK Parkway North. (The exit is at the Short Hills Mall.)
Follow JFK Parkway North for about two miles to South Orange Avenue and turn right.
Follow South Orange Avenue for about two miles, until you see the left turn for Brookside Drive. Be careful again. South Orange Avenue is a steep downhill at this point. Turn left.
Tulip Springs will come up soon on your right.

Take I-280 W to Exit 7.
Make a left at the light onto Pleasant Valley Way.
Go south on Pleasant Valley Way for 2 miles. The Reservation begins at Northfield Avenue.
Continue across Northfield Avenue (Pleasant Valley Way becomes Cherry Lane). Tulip Springs is the first picnic site on the left hand side.

From Garden State Parkway North

From New York City

Take the Lincoln Tunnel or George Washington Bridge to the New Jersey Turnpike South.
Take the New Jersey Turnpike South to Exit 15W and get onto Route 280 West.
Follow above directions from I-280 West.

From The Oranges

Go west on South Orange Avenue, ride through the Reservation and make a right at the traffic light onto Cherry Lane. Tulip Springs is the second picnic site on the right hand side.

This is New Jersey, where everybody drives, so you'll have to walk the last mile.

(As of the current writing, Google Maps' satellite imagery does not show the newly built parking garage at the arena.)

From the Port Authority Bus Terminal, take the #77 Suburban-Transit/Community-Coach (their website is http://www.coachusa.com/suburban. Go to South Mountain Arena.
Head west (left) on Northfield Ave., about 1200 feet, until you get to Cherry Lane. (If you are feeling brave, you can cut southwest across the corner of the park.
Turn south (left) on Cherry Lane, and go about two thirds of a mile further. Tulip Springs will be on your left.
For you native New Yorkers, remember that it is good form when walking in the country to walk on the left side of the road.
